Visa’s Epic Olympic Fail

Visa Poster - world sponsor of London 2012 Olympic Games confuses BMX rider, Shanaze Reid with paralympic athlete Stephanie Reid.
Visa, one of the superbrands sponsoring the London 2012 Olympic Games, has made a monumental cock-up. The credit / debit card multinational corporation proudly unveiled a 2012 themed promotional poster in London today, featuring one of the U.K’s top medal prospects,  Shanaze Reade. The only problem was they got the name of Britain’s top BMX rider totally wrong – calling her Stephanie Reid
Stephanie Reid is in fact a British Paralympic athlete, who competes in the long jump and as a sprinter. Whilst the pair might have ever-so-slightly similar names, they compete in very different sports and anyone with even a passing interest in the Olympics and Paralympics probably knows this.
What astonishes me is that this poster could have gone through so many phases of production (from design through to distribution) without anyone spotting the glaring mistake. Both Shanaze and Stephanie have received miles of column inches in the past few years, yet no one at Visa detected the error.
