U.K. BMX Roadshow!

Access Sport has announced that it will run a five-day BMX Roadshow in conjunction with leading online bike retailer, Chain Reaction Cycles. The Roadshow will tour the capital in February of this year, visiting five of the London boroughs picked to host Olympic events, offering free coaching to members of the public. The Roadshow will also mark the launch of a brand new BMX time-trial race series, spanning the capital. The combined projects are all part of Access Sport’s BMX Olympic Legacy program, which aims to inspire a new generation of BMX enthusiasts in London. The program will include the establishment of five new BMX clubs / tracks in London, one in each of the boroughs visited by the BMX Roadshow.

BMX is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in the U.K. at the moment, prompted in part by the high-profile success of British Olympic gold medal hopeful, Shanaze Reade. Reade, who is supporting the new BMX Roadshow, is credited with having inspired a new wave of interest in bike sports. She has done much to raise the popular profile of the BMX in the mainstream press and is fast developing into a national sporting icon. As well as this, the inclusion of BMX in the Olympic Games has given the sport a degree of legitimacy, which it did not previously enjoy. It has encouraged local and national political authorities in the U.K. to treat BMX more respectfully and less like a subversive counter-culture practiced by hoodies.
