Team GB MTB and BMX Olympic Squads Finalised.

This afternoon saw the long awaited announcement of Team GB’s BMX and MTB squads for the upcoming London 2012 Olympics. British Cycling held a press conference in Manchester at which the governing body gave the final names of who would be representing the U.K. in the various Olympic cycling events.
As expected, Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips were chosen to represent Great Britain in the BMX event. The selectors were confident that the injuries sustained by Phillips during last month’s BMX World Championships will not hamper his performance at the Olympics. Three-times BMX World Champion, Reade, who is a favourite for medal success, will be crossing her fingers and toes that she does not have a repeat of the bad luck that saw her crash out of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Liam Killeen and Annie Last will be representing Great Britain in the Cross Country Mountain Biking. Killeen, who has won the British MTB Championships four years in a row, came in 5th in Beijing and won the Gold Medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. 21-year-old Annie Last secured her place with Team GB after an impressive performance at the MTB World Cup on Sunday. She will be the first female rider to compete for Great Britain in an Olympic MTB event since the Sydney Games in 2000.
