Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Ireland

Artem Silchenko takes the win in Ireland and is fast catching up on second placed competitor, Gary Hunt. Orlando Duque remains the overall leader with a very healthy 100 lead.Imagine the shock to the system experienced by the competitors of the 2012 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. One week they are competing in the subtropical paradise-like Azores, the next week they are braving the freezing waters of the Irish Atlantic coast. Apparently, that’s all part of the fun of competing in the world’s premier international cliff diving tournament.

The competition touched down in Ireland on Friday 3rd August. Having already visited Corsica, Norway and the Portuguese Azores, this was the fourth stage of the series. It was hosted at Ireland’s legendary Serpent’s Lair on the Island of Aran, a favourite spot for cliff jumping daredevils from across the Emerald Isle*.

Unfortunately for former British Olympian and reigning World Champion cliff diver, Gary Hunt, the fourth stage did nothing to weaken the overall lead of Columbian cliff diving legend Orlando Duque, who is now over 100 points in front of second placed Hunt. However, neither of the two front-runners was the victor in Ireland. Instead, that accolade went to Artem Silchenko of Russia, who is currently ranked third in the overall standings, just ten points behind Hunt.

* For God’s sake don’t try this yourself. The competitors are all professionally trained athletes, who specialise in cliff diving and they have full “health and safety” support from Red Bull.
