Olympic Campsite in Queen’s Back Garden.

The BBC has reported that part of Windsor Great Park is to be transformed into an Olympic campsite, in order to provide accommodation for visitors to the 2012 London Games. It is hoped that the site will provide pitches for up to one thousand visitors attending the various events being held on the famous Eton Dorney Lake.

Since the 13th Century, Windsor Great Park has been the hunting ground of Windsor Castle. It is over 5,000 acres in size and is home to a large population of deer. It now forms part of the Crown Estates, which is the collective name for the lands held by the British Crown on behalf of the people.

The Olympic campsite is set to open on July 20th and closes on August 16th. It will provide 286 pitches to people attending the Olympic kayaking and canoeing events, which are being held near-by. The site will offer catering facilities, with food available for purchase from the Royal Farm. There will also be free entertainment, including open-air theatre and choral concerts.
