BMX – Maris Strombergs Wins USA Bluegrass Nationals

BMX Olympic Champion Wins Again.

BMX racers battle it out for the top of the podium in a professional competition. Two times Olympic BMX gold medalist, Maris Strombergs has continued with his winning streak after taking the top place on the podium at the United States BMX Bluegrass Nationals. The final of the competition took place on Friday at E.P. Sawyer State Park and had echoes of London 2012, where Strombergs successfully beat off a spirited challenge from Australian BMX rider, Sam Willoughby, to take the win. Again, the battle for first place was between Strombergs and Willoughby and once again it was the Latvian who emerged on top after some frenzied race action.

Speaking to the press, Strombergs said that the BMX race had reminded him of his appearance at London 2012 last month. He knew that his friend Willoughby was right behind him and that the finish would be incredibly tight, but nonetheless he managed to maintain his lead to the end. He went on to explain that Friday’s competition was the first time he had raced since the London Olympics and he was grateful for the opportunity to get back on his BMX and have some fun.

Willoughby, who is the reigning UCI BMX World Champion, was a bit frustrated by his performance at the competition, explaining that he got off to a slow start and felt his approach to the race had been a bit too relaxed. However, he was more than aware of the magnitude of the challenge that confronted him, acknowledging that Maris Strombergs is one of the very best BMX riders in the world and that beating him would be no small achievement. Nevertheless, Willoughby remains determined to persevere with his mission to supplant Strombergs from the top spot in a BMX championship race.
