Arctic Weather Brings on Snow Sports in the U.K.

The recent blast of Siberian weather that has swept across the country may be leaving chaos in its icy wake, but it’s also proving an excellent opportunity for Brits to sample some snow sports on domestic territory. The Penines and the Downs saw heavy snow falls, with thick layers developing on the hills and slopes. This in turn brought out skiers, snowboarders and even some snow kiters. In the Brecon Beacons, frozen waterfalls proved a first class climbing spot for a group of intrepid ice climbers and the Fens, ice skaters took advantage of some safe natural rinks.

The freezing weather arrived on Saturday, spreading ice and snow across a large stretch of the country and shutting down airports, motorways and train lines. Overnight temperatures dropped to minus twelve degrees centigrade in some areas, with day time temperatures struggling to reach above zero. Heavy snow fell across the country. England and Wales were particularly severely hit. The weather is predicted to return to normal by Tuesday.
